Software - MS Proj, Niku, Primavera, Artemis?
Need some help on presenting project plans better than in Powerpoint. I'm working on a large corporate program and we have 5 seperate workstreams each with its own PM, all using Powerpoint to layout their "visual" project plans for the next 2 years...they also have outdated MS Project plans as feedback from execs was they find it difficult to read MS Proj plans (too busy) ..do you know of any other package to allow me to pull all these 5 workstreams into anything other than Powerpoint? but easy enough to layout like MS Proj? Tough question but need help - Jim

Skills for a virtual worker?
I picked out a few skills I thought would identify a virtual project worker on a project. Namely, he/she must be able to perform tasks with limited supervision and feedback, reduced social interaction, have good organizational and time management skills, be self-motivated, demonstrate good performance, and be able to concentrate if away from a worksite or physical office campus.Your thoughts? Difference between PRINCE2, PMP and CPM certs
First, PMBOK is a guide and PRINCE2 a methodology. This means that PMBOK is a collection of recommendations, standards, things that “are true in most cases, most of the time”. It is not binding, but a map to get from start to finish, with many roads to get from one point to another. It’s like a highway where you can choose the lane you’re comfortable driving in. A guide describes “how things could be done”, whereas a methodology indicates “our way of doing things”. So all 3 really differ in sme degree. They all really do address Project Management, but I'd suggest that if you work, or intend to work, in the UK as a project manager then PRINCE2 certification is highly desirable. If you want to work in the public sector in the UK, then PRINCE2 certification is pretty much mandatory, as many recruiters will discard non-PRINCE certified applicants as a matter of course. PMP is obviously well deployed and a good cert, but IAPPM blends the both of them together to get a more better hybrid approach. So a bit of a balance between them all.

View Point on Lean
I would like to ask what is everyone's view on Lean Processes in relation to project/program management? [We have a standard called Lean Electronics which is lean processes that are heavily tied to engineering to reduce waste of engineering design.] -Mo

Project Time Keeping
What time systems do you recommend for keeping track of PM time (both employees and PM contractors)? I was leaning towards MS Project 2003+ and a time-capture plug-in on a daily/weekly basis to incorporate time capture, project accounting and project management. Please let me know if anyone else uses something else that works.

projects in Japan
I have met many great PM's in Japan, and it is incredible to see the level of planning and quality that goes into their projects. Speaking to some members was that a point of difference in what constitutes a 'high flyer' in Japan is that individual achievement is somewhat de-emphasized. While individual accomplishment is respected, and a requirement, rewards and recognition rarely get applied below the team level to just 1 PM. Most times, the basic unit that succeeds or fails in any task is the project team. It is rare for one individual to be singled out for censure if a task fails. The project team usually embrace the team spirit more than here in the US for example. Thoughts?

What are the advantages and disadvantages for a Project to be the part of a Project Program?
I am looking for the advantages and disadvantages of a Project Program. I am writing my Masters Dissertation and I have a Thesis that a Project Program can increase the success factor of a single project. I found Project Management/Program Management interesting. I am looking for opinions from experts who have experience in project programs/implementation projects or both. I have already read a lot about it, but I need some practical examples!

Clarity project tool report back
"Establishing a project management office is the foundation for improving your organization’s project, program and portfolio management best practices." - So... armed with this knowledge, its key to choose the right tool for your enterprise, Right? You want to be cost effective and serve the needs of (1) Project & Program Managers, (2) Executives and Stakeholders....I am somewhat myopic in my views so far on the ability of the Clarity (ex Niku) tool to do this. Are they able to deliver an "efficient" tool, without the complexity and customization I've seen. Capturing all fields and data can be done and I'm sure this is defintely not an overnight exercice an will consume many internal PMO/PPO or escalations internally to get it right. It's allright to have a tool, but when one starts making life complicated for PM's, then we are perhaps not addressing the right things. Let's hear your thoughts.
